Container Shelters: Heavy Twist-Lock Base Casting Integrity & AS/NZS 1170.2 Shear Overturning Verification

1. Overturning Moment vs Container Ballast Weight

When a 20m span container shelter is subjected to 160 km/h winds, the horizontal lateral wind force generates an overturning moment ($M_{OT}$) about the leeward container base: $$M_{OT} = sum (F_{wind,i} cdot h_i)$$ To prevent container sliding or tipping without concrete ground anchors, the stabilizing resisting moment ($M_R$) provided by container dead weight plus internal stored cargo must satisfy: $$ ext{Factor of Safety } (FOS) = rac{M_R}{M_{OT}} ge 1.50$$ Champion provides engineered ballast charts specifying required dead weight ballast (gravel, drill pipes, or water bladders) inside each container.
